32 Going On 80?

Good morning everyone!  I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday weekend with your families and that you had some gorgeous Spring weather just like we did here in the Northeast. Seriously, it couldn’t have been more perfect up here the past few days!

At the beginning of last week after viewing the upcoming weekend weather forecast, the hubster and I decided that it would be fun to take a little overnight trip on Saturday with our son. We went back and forth between whether to go to Boston or New York City, and due to a last minute killer deal on a prime location hotel, the Big Apple won.

This was our little man’s first trip into the city and he was such a trooper! And of course he loved FAO Schwartz, and Toys R Us with the big ferris wheel, and running around Central Park, and…well…I guess not much else really matters when you are four years old!

When we finally got home around 4:00pm yesterday, the hubster and I collapsed on the couch like we had just run the New York marathon.  I mean, we were POOPED!  Of course, our little dude had slept in the car the whole way home from the train station, so he had a total second wind and went right into building various Lego “vehicles” out of the new sets that we’d bought him at the big city toy stores.  And he really didn’t seem to care too much about the fact that his Daddy and I had completely run out of gas and were merely surviving on fumes at that point.  My hubby turned to me at one point and asked how it was possible that two grown adults had completely been kicked in the ass by a four year old.  The answer to that one was pretty apparent.  WE ARE GETTING OLD.

And the fact that we were completely worn out after our little weekend excursion wasn’t the only indicator to that fact.  There were quite a few other tell-tale signs that the hubster and I just can’t quite hang like we used to before our little stud arrived.

(Note:  The following list is in random order, though I have to admit that #1 IS my absolute favorite)!

1. I sneezed in the middle of Times Square and peed in my pants a little bit and had to kind of waddle into the hotel with my knees stuck together so that I didn’t lose the entire contents of my bladder right there in the lobby. And yes, this happened more than once.

2.  My cousins from Pittsburgh were also in NYC this past weekend and they had their 14-year old daughter with them, who offered to babysit our son on Saturday night so the four of us could go out for some adult time.  The hubster and I turned her down because we were just way too exhausted to go out to dinner.  And we were in bed that night before 10pm.  (I mean, who turns down a babysitter)???

3. I actually noticed the crowds in the city and even mentioned something to the hubster about how I couldn’t believe how many people there were and that it must be because it was a holiday weekend.  He then reminded me that NYC is ALWAYS packed no matter what weekend it is.  I guess I just never paid that much attention to it before.  But this time I really just wanted to yell, “MOVE PEOPLE!!” every time the walk signal changed so that we could get across the street before the little orange hand started flashing because I had such an irrational fear of our stroller being run down by an out-of-control taxi cab.

4. I caught myself making a comment to the hubster about how I didn’t understand how “all these young chicks” walk around the city in stilettos when I am barely managing to stay upright in flats.  And then we passed the Easy Spirit store and I seriously considered stopping in for an impulse buy.  (For the record, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.  I mean, I’m not THAT old yet.  And please don’t go hatin’ on me if you own a pair of Easy Spirits. This is not an insult directed at you, it is just my personal philosophy that if I purchase a pair of their shoes then I’ve officially made the transition from semi-cool mom to old lady).

5. This morning, even though I only had one measly glass of wine last night because that’s all that was left in the bottle after my cousin and I had taken part in an all-out guzzle fest during her visit here last week, I feel completely and totally hung over, minus the whole sick part. My feet hurt. My eyes burn. And it’s only 8:30am and I really feel like I need a nap.

That’s all I can manage to squeeze out folks.  Time for another cup of coffee.

FYI: I am having trouble signing into my Google Friend Connect account, so if you are a new follower and I’m not following you back yet, it’s not intentional!  Hopefully I will get it figured out soon…if I can manage to wake up today!

So jealous of your NYC experience. But I know what you mean. When we went away, I went to bed at 7;30 one night. It’s ok. You said no to the Easy Spirits and that’s a huge step.

PS – Playmobil? One of my favorite things growing up. I can’t wait til Turtle is old enough to handle the little pieces. It’s going to be like a second childhood for me.

Oh boy, can I ever relate! Especially to the needing a nap part. But you are NOT old yet, nope. I personally refuse to call myself old till I’m 90–maybe not even then. Even if my achin’ bunyons and plantar fasciitis force me to wear Easy Spirits. (Uh…I’d like to include your Easy Spirit disclaimer for my comment as well. ;o)

Oh boy do I know how you feel! Hubby and I went to the movies last night and considered passing on dinner afterwards because we were so tired. And the movie was over before 9:00! I guess that’s just what happens to the best of us when we spend our days chasing children around. :) Glad you passed on the shoes though. that’s a HUGE step.

Yep, you’ve crossed over. It’s our kids. They age us before it’s time and we’re prime.

Omg! Thats hilarious.. me and my husband had somewhat of the same conversation when we took our toddler to the fair. I was like isnt it amazing that we used to walk around here for hours and hours and never get tired,, but not all I wanna do is sit on the bench like an old fart! Bahahaha!!!

I’m jealous of your NYC trip! I miss having that city just a short drive away.

I stayed up past 11:00 on Saturday night and thought I was going to die all day yesterday. What was I thinking, and when did that happen?

Glad you guys had a good time, even if you’re dog tired today!

I often feel beat up by my daughter’s energy! My favorite is saying no to the babysitter. Having my daughter every other week once meant that the “off” weeks were “my” weeks to do everything, go out, eat whenever I want. But in the last 6 months or so….. those off weeks mean staying in, catching up on reading, and sleeping!! :)

    Kmama says:

Nothing like a little “vacation” to make you feel old. LOL We were in NYC for the first time this past summer and had a blast, but yes, were extremely tired!

    Shell says:

My definition of “fun” is definitely changing as I am getting older. I’m TIRED by 10pm.

Still sounds like a fun trip, though!

I was just telling my doctor last week: I’m 32, I’m not supposed to feel this way yet!! LOL

Oh I’m so jealous of your trip to the big apple! We stayed home for egg hunting and then went to see family for dinner but I can still relate. I had all intentions to post our Easter pictures last night when we got home but I still haven’t found the energy! I’ve had six cups of coffee and I still don’t feel like I can!

Number 1 is hilarious!! I have a 6 month old and if I’m standing and need to sneeze it’s imparitive that I cross my legs!!! Bad things will happen if I don’t!
Sounds like a fun trip….glad you had a good weekend!!!

I get wiped easy, keeping up with 4-5 kids does me in. I truly wish someone would find a way to harness the children’s energy and transfer some to moms.

We had a busy day last Saturday. I guess standing in line for hours is like driving for a long time- it’s more work than you realize. After we got home, the kids kept going and going, but all I wanted to do was nap!

    Jenny says:

Sounds like an awesome weekend. We just got back from NYC and I am with you. I feel like I do not remember it being as busy as it was! It was crazy busy and I am still recovering!

    Emma says:

Oh bless you….I have all these problems too!!! We have been away for the weekend and I’m sooo tired I need a break to recover from the break!!! Hope that you had an awesome time x

    Nolie says:

Vacations always leave one needing another vacation to recover from it. I had to laugh at turning down a baby sitter. I have done that. I rather stay home and relax in a quiet house once my kid is asleep then be anywhere else.

    Heather says:

NYC, I would love to go visit someday. I could not walk 4 steps in high heels.
Lately I feel like I am in my 80′s and just drained all the time.

    Michele says:

I’m jealous of your NYC trip! I remember when my husband and I would push ourselves to get everything we could out of a trip…now we’re content to just do a few things, and then we’re pooped! Then we have our teenage daughters rolling their eyes and making comments about how *old* and *boring* we are. Sigh.

I took my oldest to a dog show this weekend. All I did was drive, move a few crates around, and sit. I’ve been pooped all day today from the experience. And I’ve got sixteen more dog shows to go this season. I’ll be checking into the old folks’ home by the end of it all.

  20. 20

HA! We have turned down free tickets to shows, dinners and many babysitting offers just because the thought of staying out late and giving up even a few hours of sleep is just not worth it!

I miss NYC so much. I used to travel there with work at least twice a year. We want to take the little man this year…it will be interesting to see how different a trip that will be.

I pee my pants a little when I either laugh, sneeze, cough a bit too hard, and sometimes if I turn my head the wrong way. We were lucky enough to go to NYC last November, by ourselves. My mom stayed at home with our little dude, so we actually got to fly by ourselves (which is such a freakin luxury, since I travel all the time with the little man). The trip was incredible, we went to the Lucky Shops event, and even had VIP tickets. So I got to shop amazing designers at a discount, drink fabulous cocktails, and eat fantastic finger foods. And I saw Melissa Joan Hart!!! But we both wished he could’ve been with us. But only for like, 2 seconds. We’re going back with him this year, and I can’t wait for him to see all the cool stuff there.

    Chelle says:

    I didn’t drink wine all weekend–shocker! It was NOT intentional…it just didn’t happen…

And the whole peeing pants when you sneeze thing–um, I was raking one day and doing yard work. And this happened. I had to grab the girls and run inside {the neighbors were outside…doh!}. I’m glad I’m not the only one this happens to, hehe!

And NYC–that is my dream vacay. I would love, love, LOVE to go there!

    xoxo

I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVE NYC! When we were there, several years ago, we were the only eyewitnesses to an officer related shooting. This happened JUST as we were coming up from the subway after visiting the World Trade Center site. Seeing HUNDREDS of people screaming and running was insanely scary, especially after the memories of 911 were so fresh in our minds from the WTC site.

I used to wear high high heels ALLLLLLLLLLLL the time. Ever since I had my daughter 3 years ago, they have stayed in my closet. I break out an occasional heel-ish sandal, but I just can’t do the heels anymore. And I’m sad about it. lol

Yep, it’s hard to be Mom Sexy in a pair of East Spirits. If you figure out a way to make that work, though, be sure to post it. Those shoes do look comfy!

    Sarah C. says:

I have absolutely no desire to go out on weekends even with a babysitter available these days. All I can usually think of is how tired I am, and how terrible I will feel the next day if I’m tired and hung over. Oh how life changes!

    MandyP says:

Sounds like a great trip! Glad you had a good time. Cool that you have cousins from my neck of the woods. Wonder what part of Pittsburgh they live in?

  27. 27
    The Mommyologist says:

Mandy- They live in Sewickley! A lot of my family still lives there! Love it there!

  28. 28

Love it! Great post – and I’ll meet you for the 4:30pm early bird dinner special anytime! (:

  29. 29

I’d give anything to feel 80 again. I feel 102 most days ;)

  30. 30

I wish I can go to NYC but honestly I think I would be frightened by the sheer volume of people. I know Hubs will never go because he can’t stand to be in crowds. So maybe one day I will get to go, but for now I will just live vicariously through people. :)

BTW: You guys aren’t old, the four year old is just made of sugar so he is just full of enery. ;)

    Brooke says:

Your not old and your not alone in feeling tired either! I’m right there with you! It does sound like you had a fun trip :) I’d love to visit NYC someday! Maybe when my toddler is a little older lol

  32. 32
    Erin says:

I hear ya! I can’t stay up/out late, either. I am so lame and old. I also can’t hold my liquor and am a really cheap date. It still sounds like you had fun and you were brave to take him to FAO–my kids would never let us leave a place like that!

  33. 33
    Kim says:

You were in Central Park on Saturday? I was there with my sister and my daughter too. How weird if we passed by each other? lol It going to be another hot one today!

    Christy says:

Sounds like a fun trip! I know what you mean about being worn out. I pretty much agree with you on everything. And I’ve noticed lately that if I sit on the floor for a while, I have a hard time getting up…my knees are killing me! It would be great if I had half the energy that the kiddos have (I’m sure it doesn’t help that I stay up late to catch up on everything I can’t get done during the day).
