I Talked To Candace Cameron Bure, And She Even Shared Her Taco Recipe With Me!

A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege and pleasure of doing a phone interview with none other than D.J. Tanner herself, Candace Cameron Bure!  I used to watch Full House every single Friday night as a kid, and I always idolized Candace and wanted to be like her. And what’s weird is that people actually told me that I looked like her…and sometimes they still do. What do you think…is there a slight resemblance other than the fact that I’m not a celebrity?

I don’t know…I can sorta see it? I’d love to go back in time and tell my 12-year old self that 21 years later I’d get the chance to actually speak to D.J. Tanner. This may sound nuts, but I feel like I achieved some sort of childhood dream by getting to connect with her for 10 minutes. I did my best to sound as normal and collected as possible on the phone, but let’s be honest…I was totally starstruck! Full House forever baby!

Anyway, I got the chance to talk to Candace about how great the slow cooker is for busy moms. She’s educating people all about the benefits of the crock pot in honor of National Eat Together Week.

When I talked to her I felt like I was talking to one of my friends! I asked her about her three kids, Natasha, Lev, and Maks…and I asked her how she gets them all to sit around the dinner table…because that seems to be a huge challenge in my household.

She told me that mealtimes have gotten easier since her kids are now 12, 10, and 8, but the fact that she gets them involved in helping her cook is a plus as well. She also really values dinner time as family time, and by using the crock pot, she can spend more time connecting with her family than prepping meals in the kitchen. Sometimes she even sets the slow cooker the night before, and when she wakes up in the morning, dinner is done!  All she has to do is reheat it when she gets home.

If you’d like to hear my entire interview, you can click the following link. It will take you to one other page, click it again, and it will play. Just ignore the awkward pause in the middle where I totally lost my train of thought!

You can hear more about why Candace loves her crock pot by viewing the video below…and I’ve also included her recipe for her famous pork carnitas tacos after the video. Enjoy!

Candace’s Carnitas Tacos

2 pounds boneless pork shoulder roast (Boston butt), trimmed

1 carrot, diced

1/2 onion, diced

1/4 cup dry red wine or chicken broth

2 tablespoons chili powder

4 cups thinly shredded red cabbage

3 tablespoons mayonnaise

Salt and pepper

12 7- to 8-inch corn tortillas, warmed

1 avocado, pitted, peeled and thinly sliced

Combine carrot, onion and wine in slow cooker.

Sprinkle roast on all sides with chili powder, rubbing it into meat. Season on all sides with salt and add to slow cooker. Cover and cook on low until roast is falling-apart tender, about 6 hours.

Use tongs or a slotted spoon to transfer meat to a large bowl. Use two forks to shred meat into bite-sized pieces. Moisten/season with cooking juices to taste. Cover to keep warm and set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine cabbage and mayonnaise. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Arrange 2 tortillas on each serving plate. Fill tortillas with pork, cabbage mixture, and avocado and serve. (Alternately, arrange pork, cabbage mixture and avocado on a platter and let guests make their own tacos.)

Cooking tip: For even more flavorful carnitas, brown roast on all sides in a lightly oiled skillet before sprinkling with chili powder.

I Need A Bra Intervention

Ok, I’ll admit it. My name is Mary, and I am in serious need of a bra intervention. I’m totally not kidding. Something needs to be done right away. Because my girls need help.

I cannot even tell you how much I stress over my bra each and every day. I really don’t have too many of them, and of the ones that I do own, none are frilly or cute. I’ve gone straight for the comfort factor on this one girls, but the truth is, comfort just doesn’t seem to be working out for me as far as looking hot in a tight shirt goes.

I’ve always had trouble finding bras that are both cute and fit correctly, but the problem definitely became some sort of incurable “condition” after I had my son. I’ve never been shy about bragging about my small boobs, and I actually love the fact that they are small and don’t get in my way. But I’ll let all of you “more endowed” girls in on a little secret:

After having kids…small boobs sag too. They know their way towards the ground just as well as their larger counterparts, which brings us to the issue of support.

I’ve been measured in a department store dressing room by the nice bra lady more than once, and every single time, the nice bra lady tells me that I’m a 34 A. But every single time that I try on a 34, I feel like it’s cutting into my skin and leaving red marks under my boobs, so I ALWAYS buy a 36 even when they tell me it’s too big. And it’s definitely a bit too big, because it kind of bunches at the sides…but I’ll take bunching over cutting any day. Why can’t somebody make a size 35? That would be perfect.

Oh yeah, and one more thing…what the hell is up with bra-line bulge? Am I seriously supposed to sacrifice cheeseburgers and wine in order to make things nice and smooth and flat in that area? I think not.

So there you have it folks. I’m a 33-year old woman who preaches being Mom Sexy on a daily basis but can’t pick out a decent bra to save my life.

Any suggestions on how to get my girls to “rise to the occasion” are much appreciated. And if there are any bra makers out there who think that their undergarments can stand up to my criticism, bring it on. I double-dog dare you.

I’m Not Annoying And I Won’t Gush, But I Do Have A Great Hubby

Hi everyone! I know I’ve been kind of missing in action for the past couple weeks, but to say things have been nuts would be the understatement of the year.  Between getting my son back to school, trying to shake a bad case of bronchitis, and having to cancel my trip to Bloggy Boot Camp due to a family matter, my poor blog has been totally neglected. But I haven’t forgotten about my awesome bloggy friends, I promise!

Anyway, today is the hubster’s birthday, and it got me thinking about how I don’t really say much about him on my blog. I mean, I definitely use him for humorous material just like any good wife should, but sometimes I don’t think that he realizes just how much I love and appreciate him. Because he’s a pretty cool dude.

Now, I’m not going to gush and get all sappy and talk about how I have the best husband in the world like people do on Facebook, because when people do that I typically want to hit them over the head with a frying pan, but I have come up with a list on why I think the hubster is definitely a keeper.

1. He puts up with my shit. And even though I know that I don’t really need to explain things any further than that, just know that The Mommyologist isn’t exactly a “peach” all of the time. I can be a real pain in the ass, folks.

2. The hubster can cook. And when I say he can cook, I don’t mean that he can pull the cellophane off a tray of Stouffer’s lasagna and stick it in the oven. I mean that he can whip up all sorts of gourmet things…and he even uses butcher’s twine and crap like that. I really appreciate not having to be the only one in the house who makes meals.

3. He is a total computer nerd. And I dig it. And if our internet goes down, he has it back up in a matter of minutes. It’s like having a built-in Geek Squad.

4. He is an amazing father and knows our son’s routine like the back of his hand. When we do the “hand-off” he takes over, no instructions necessary. From some talks I’ve had with certain friends, this can be sort of rare, so I know how lucky I am.

5. He works his ass off and still comes home happy to see us and never complains. And he works his ass off not only because he loves his family, but because he truly loves and takes pride in his work and his company. Not many people can say that these days.

6. He never gives me shit when I wake up hungover on a Sunday morning after a good party.

7. He calls me out when I’m being a complete and total pain in the ass. Did I already mention that I can be a pain in the ass?

8. He knows his way around a boat. For whatever reason, I’ve found this quality extremely attractive ever since I was 17 and dated a 15-year old who had no driver’s license, but did belong to the local yacht club.

9. He gets shit done. And this works out because I am a complete and total procrastinator. When the hubster starts something, he HAS to finish it. Even if this means installing a ceiling fan in the master bedroom after dark and having to wear one of those headlamp flashlights to see what he’s doing.

10. He is 100% behind me and is supportive of the whole blogging thing, and I can’t thank him enough for that. I’ve often said that, “I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m on my way”, and I know that he will support me through every single step on my journey.

See honey?  I DO paint you in a positive light on my blog. Happy Birthday and I love you!

I Took A Wrong Turn And OnStar Saved Me!

I sure hope that all of you enjoyed a wonderful Labor Day weekend with your family and friends!  I had such a great time hanging out with my boys over the weekend, and on Monday, we decided to go out and about and have a little lunch to take advantage of the beautiful Connecticut weather!

We took off in the Malibu and hopped on I-84 West. We thought it would be fun to walk around West Hartford center a bit…after all, 80 degree days in September are few and far between up here!

While we were enjoying listening to some tunes over our Bose speakers in the Chevy Malibu, I somehow lost track of where we were and got off on the wrong exit.  For a minute I thought about turning around and getting back on the interstate, but then I remembered the OnStar service in my Chevy Malibu…and it directed us straight to one of our favorite lunch spots in Blue Back Square!

Taking a wrong turn is never a problem in the Chevy Malibu…because OnStar will always come to the rescue!

10 Reasons Why Blogging Is The Best Job Ever

Do you ever feel like you are part of some sort of secret society when it comes to blogging?  I honestly think that it’s one of those things that you just don’t really “get” until you do it yourself.

C’mon…you all know what I’m talking about. I’m referring to the people you know outside of the blogosphere who think that there is no way in hell that you can possibly make a career out of it…or even have your blog be considered a job.

You all know how much I love Facebook, (yes, I’m being sarcastic), and the other night, I had someone mock what I’m doing with the whole blog thing.  This person basically told me that what I’m doing is “cute and fun”, but that it will never amount to more than that. Yes…I know that she’s just jealous of me, because I’ve pretty much realized that when people try and cut you down, it’s because they are unhappy with their own lives, and it makes them feel better to pretend that what you are doing is not as great as it sounds. For the record, it is. It’s just as awesome as I make it out to be.

I actually want to take a moment and thank this person, because her little jealous hissy fit made me understand even more just how much I love my job.

As bloggers, we know that blogging is the BEST JOB EVER…and here are 10 reasons why:

1. It may take some time, but if you are dedicated and treat your blog as your job, it does eventually pay off. I’m making a nice little salary for myself now from my gig over at Babble, and I never would’ve gotten that job if it weren’t for what I’ve accomplished with The Mommyologist. I’m also getting some pretty cool swag from THIS blog…and you can’t put a price on that. For all bloggers…even bloggers who are just starting out, I can’t stress this to you enough: STICK WITH IT!!  Always see your blog as a stepping stone to bigger things. Because it is. It’s a resume in itself.

2. I have the BEST co-workers in the world. I worked in many office settings before deciding to stay home with my son, and I can honestly say that I’ve never had better co-workers than the other amazing bloggers I connect with on a daily basis. And we ARE co-workers, because we support each other, sometimes we even team up on projects, and we share information about our company (blogging) in order to help it succeed.

3. The water cooler gossip totally can’t be beat. But the best part is that we never gossip about each other.  Whether it’s talking about celebrities’ twitter accounts, blog conferences, or the latest social media platform, the conversation never gets old.

4. You really can’t beat the office dress code.  Most mornings, I work in my pajamas while having coffee, and over this summer, I’ve even worked in my bathing suit.

5. Since pretty much everything we do is online, we never have to make copies, send faxes, etc. Just think about how many trees we save!  Who knew that blogging could be so green, right?

6. Social media is where it’s at, people.  And as bloggers, we are one step ahead of the game, because our jobs revolve around it. Even if your blog is just a hobby, you are gaining valuable skills that will be a complete and total necessity in the next few years, and you’re having fun doing it.  (See how much this job rocks)?

7. I’m sure there are a few exceptions, but for the most part, there are no cubicles involved in blogging. And our office chairs are way comfier…and some days even come in the form of a couch.

8. The coffee at my house is way cheaper than Starbucks. I’m saving money by not having to stop there on my way to work.

9. As a blogger, never forget how many people you help on a daily basis with the content you provide. By sharing our challenges, struggles, and achievements with others, we have the ability to connect with other people going through the same things. Sometimes just hearing someone else’s story is enough to make any obstacle seem a whole lot easier to conquer. And to any of you who think that your blog is small and hasn’t reached or touched anyone, you are wrong. You never know who is reading your blog, and you never know whose life you made a little bit easier with your posts.

10. They say that if you are doing something you love, you will never work a day in your life.  And that is how I feel about blogging. I love every single second of it and cannot even believe how much it has enriched my life since I started doing it last October.  It hasn’t even been a year, and I’ve done things I never would’ve dreamed I’d get to take part in.  And I just can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.  Thank you to all of you who make blogging the BEST job in the world!

I LOVE MY JOB!!!

Soccer Goals And Groceries Are No Match For My Malibu

If any of you moms out there are anything like me, then you are pretty much running around like a chicken with your head cut off every day just trying to keep it all straight! Between blogging, running errands, and squeezing in some fun time with my son, I need a car that can accommodate all the “stuff” I need to log around without breaking up my day.

I am used to driving an SUV, so I’ve never really had an issue with cargo space.  I wasn’t sure whether or not the Chevy Malibu was going to be a challenge as far as storage space goes, but I was so pleased to find out that it is more than roomy enough for my lifestyle!

My son starts soccer in another week, so the other day I took him down to the park to practice kicking the ball around a bit. He’s just a little guy, so it’s easier for him to use the small soccer goal that we have at home versus the larger ones on the town field. I was so excited when our soccer goal fit right into the Malibu, and I had no issues shutting the trunk!

We got a few good soccer runs in, and then I remembered that I needed to go to the grocery store.  I didn’t have time to run home and drop off the soccer goal, so I kept my fingers crossed and hoped that all of my bags would still fit in the trunk.

Tons Of Cargo Space! from Mary Fischer on Vimeo.

I got all of the groceries in, and still would’ve had a bit of room for even more items!

The Chevy Malibu fit rights into my hectic day as a mom…and I don’t miss that SUV one bit!

Do I really have to return this car in 4 weeks?
